I think I have been bitten by Bed Bugs what do bites and bed bugs look like?
It is difficult to identify bed bugs from their bites because our bodies will react differently to them. The signs are going to bed fine and waking up itchy. However early in a bed bug infestation, the victim may not be sensitive to the bites and they may not feel itchy this sometime comes later.
It is common for bed bugs to cause a line of bites that follow blood vessels they can occur anywhere on the body. These bites can develop into nasty welts.
Bedbug bites are unlikely to wake the victim because they inject their victims with saliva, which contains an anaesthetic and an anticoagulant. A single bed bug often bites more than once around the same area. Bites in different parts of the body indicate being bitten by several bed bugs. See Bed Bug Bite Images
Why do I itch?
Bites cannot usually be felt until some minutes or hours after the bugs have bitten, as a dermatological reaction to the injected agents, and the first inclination of a bite usually comes from the desire to scratch the bite site.
How can I stop the itching?
Antihistamines have been found to reduce itching.
Do bed bugs bite children?
Yes the little pests do not discriminate.

There have been no known cases of bed bugs passing disease from host to host. Extensive testing has been carried out in laboratory settings that conclude that bed bugs are unlikely to pass disease from one person to another

Female bed bugs lay their eggs in secluded areas, laying up to five eggs a day and 500 during a lifetime. Do Bed Bugs only live in beds?
Bed bugs hide in all sorts of places, in mattresses especially behind ‘buttons’ and piping, in headboards, bed frames, carpets etc. So through treatment is essential.
During the daytime, bed bugs prefer to hide close to where people sleep. Their flattened bodies enable them to fit into all sorts of tiny nooks and crannies - especially those associated with mattresses (especially behind buttons and piping),box springs, bed frames, and headboards. They will hide in any fabric including curtains, carpets and clothing. In addition they hide behind light switches, wall sockets, in magazines by your bed, places where wallpaper lifted
Bed bugs do not have nests like ants but they gather together in habitual hiding places. Bed bugs prefer to hide close to where they feed. However if necessary, they will crawl several feet to obtain a blood meal. Initial infestations tend to be around beds, but the bugs will become scattered throughout a room, occupying any crevice or protected location. They also can spread to adjacent rooms.
It often seems that bed bugs come from nowhere. The bugs are efficient hitchhikers and are often brought into the home on luggage, clothing, etc. Outbreaks can often be traced to travel, especially in countries or cities where bed bugs are common. This is a particular problem for hotels, and holiday homes where turnover of occupants is constant.
Once bed bugs are introduced, they often spread room to room throughout a building.
What are their feeding habits?
Bed bugs are attracted by warmth and the presence of carbon dioxide, the bug pierces the skin of its host with two hollow tubes. With one tube it injects its saliva, which contains anticoagulants and anaesthetics, while with the other it withdraws the blood of its host. After feeding for about five minutes, the bug returns to its hiding place. The bites cannot usually be felt until some minutes or hours later, as a dermatological reaction to the injected agents.
Patterns of bites can be in a row or a cluster as they follow blood vessels.
How long do they live without feeding?
Bed bugs can live for a year or as much as 18 months without feeding, they typically seek blood every five to ten days. Bedbugs that go dormant for lack of food often live longer than a year, well-fed specimens live typically for six to nine months.
How many eggs can they lay?
Bed bugs lay their eggs in secluded areas, laying up to five eggs a day and as many as 500 during a lifetime
Should I vacate the bedroom?
No if you vacate the affected bedroom they will spread to other rooms in the house in the search for a blood mean. Best to localise the problem and treat it accordingly.
My neighbour has bed bugs am I at risk?
Possibly as bed bugs can be transferred on peoples clothing and they can burrow through walls they can also travel between units in multi-unit dwellings. Better to be safe than sorry!
Is it true that bed bugs travel?
Bed Bugs are well travelled hitchhikers. It has been said that this is one of the main reasons for infestation. People can often acquire bedbugs from hotel bed rooms, and take them to hotels. As a result of increased domestic and international tourism people spread them and bring them back to their homes in or on their luggage and clothes. Bed Bugs have been known to infest planes and feed on passengers as they sleep.
How do bed bugs get in to my home?
There are several means by which homes can become infested with bedbugs. People can often acquire bedbugs from hotels, as a result of increased domestic and international tourism, and bring them back to their homes in their luggage. They also can pick them up by inadvertently bringing infested furniture or used clothing to their household. Bedbugs may actually crawl onto and be carried on people's clothing. They can also move between units in multi-unit dwellings. Bed Bug rate of transfer is dramatic which puts at risk our homes, hotels, and public places like planes, trains, theatres, cinemas and even high street shop any public place where transportation, your clothing, and a blood meal is available to them is a place where Bed Bugs will hide away. Wherever people exist, Bed Bugs can find a potential carrier particularly where they sit or lie down.
How do I use Blitz Bed Bug Spray
Do not move out of the bedroom, if you do the chances are they will follow you spreading the infestation!
Bed bugs are a nightmare for many, especially when you just can't seem to get rid of them. They are one of the most difficult pests to eliminate, Blitz will help you.
Bed bugs are very small and hide themselves in mattresses, box spring, within bed frames, under bed bases, within bed headboards, curtains and curtain poles, behind loose wallpaper, within paintings, wall sockets, light switches, telephones and possible in wardrobes. Also behind wall partitioning, suspended ceilings, skirting boards, on clothing or furnishings, and anywhere with a dark crack/crevice/seam providing harborage. They have also been known to hide in alarm clocks and in clothing. They are tiny and will live anywhere they can fit!
We recommend that some specific preparations are made to the property prior to treatment with Blitz Bed Bugs, to ensure that the treatment is most effective. When commencing treatment strip and launder all bedding and vacuum thoroughly.
Spray the underside of the vacuum cleaner and always empty it after use.
Remove all clutter and all personal items from the room such as magazines books etc. Spray the complete mattress lightly with Blitz Bed Bugs using more spray where evidence of activity exists. Treat folds and seems thoroughly. Dismantle the bed where possible and treat any affected furniture. Spray all furniture in the room including the bed headboard, wardrobes, (in severe infestations clothing should be removed) and the inside treated, cupboards and the undersides and interiors of chests and where drawers slide. Lightly spray curtains and curtain poles, upholstered furniture, walls around the bed and all of the carpet in the room. Pay particular attention to skirting boards, floorboards, behind loose wallpaper, around wall sockets, telephone points and anywhere with a slight crack or crevice, they will hide in any little nook or cranny.
If you live in a flat, you should know that bed bugs can find their way through cracks in walls and ceilings so they may be established in adjacent flats in which case your neighbour should also treat their premises.
Bed Bugs are nocturnal feeders and feed off of the host whilst sleeping. Setting an alarm clock for an hour before dawn can prove to be a successful way of actually spotting these unwelcome guests and treating them directly and most successfully.
Re-treat with spray every day for a week, then every week for a month and then every month until bug free for 6 months. If the infestation is severe we recommend continuing the treatment every two days until all signs of the infestation has disappeared.
It is highly recommended that monthly preventative treatment is undertaken thereafter as Bed Bugs can last for 18 month without a blood feed and may reappear.
Further Bed Bug information:
Bed Bugs like to stay close together. With frequent feeding, they can gorge themselves up to twice their body weight in blood every night; adults can live for up to 18 months. They breed by laying eggs, 5 or more per day that usually hatch after about 10 to 20 days. The bugs then grow through a series of stages. At each stage they need to feed on blood, until they become adults after about nine to 18 weeks. A female can lay between 150 and 500 eggs in her life. Bed Bugs can go for 18 months without a feed.
The presence of bedbugs in a room can be detected by the following:
- blood spotting on bedding and or furniture
- brown excrement spots close to where they live and on bedding and soft furniture
- whitish/opaque un-hatched and hatched eggs
- in heavy infestations, a sweet almond smell is common
- bed bugs are not normally seen during the day
